I cannot believe spring break is almost over! This year, I went on a Habitat for Humanity trip for a second time, and we chose to go to Athens, Alabama, which is in the north part of the state. For Athens-Limestone County's Habitat, we've spent the week helping with a new organization in the area called Joy's House, which is a family that takes in women and give them a place to live. They are becoming a non-profit organization. We spent our first two days inside a house they are preparing for more women and their children by tearing out the walls and putting in insulation.
For our other two days of work, we are working on the roof of a Habitat home. We're getting into work I've done before, so it was easier for me to pitch in here and there. I wish I was better at all this stuff! We'll be back at this house Friday to start the second stage and third stages to the roofing. It's been a great experience, and I am glad we chose to come down here. The local affiliate's team members have been great with us and even are getting others to provide almost all of our meals! I know I've been really appreciative of them!
The people down in Alabama are incredibly nice. A local church, Copeland, is letting us stay in their manse for the week. It's a beautiful home and couldn't have asked for more. They also had us as guests for their pot luck dinner, and of course we were well fed southern style. With every meal we've been provided with, I can say that they know how to keep their families well fed! There's just so much food every meal! BBQ pork, turkey and chicken is fantastic! I've enjoyed their style of sauce. I love how friendly and welcoming everyone has been, and it makes me want to become apart of this community! If I ever get the chance to come back, I definitely will.
Today is our day of adventure! We get to explore the town and other towns around us. We have many things we'd like to do, and hopefully we'll fit it all in. I'm excited to get to use my new camera at these new spots we find in northern Alabama!
