These metals are awesome! |
Today our sorority went to Girls on the Run in the Columbus area. Girls on the Run is a new philanthropic partnership that Alpha Sigma Alpha added this year. I think this organization is really great. For our first year in participating with the event of the 5K run, we made posters and stood along the track to cheer the runners on. I expected it to just be elementary and junior high girls, but there were all sorts of people.
The girls have mentors, so of course they were running with them, but it felt more like a family event! Fathers, mothers, brothers, and friends joined in on the run with the girls. (Three of the dads were running with strollers and the cutest babies, and every time they ran by all of us had to stop cheering and go "awwww"!)
I think this organization is really empowering. One part that made me smile was towards the end of the race. There was a runner and her supporters, and she was struggling to finish with a strong pace. Two other runners who were already finished the race came to her side. When she saw the other two girls joined her, she picked up her pace, and they finished the race together. I was so glad to see that!
I am looking forward to finding more ways to help out for next year. The drive to Columbus every week can't be done, but there are more ways our sorority can help. We found out after the race that anyone is allowed to run the 5K without mentoring a girl, so I really want to jump in there and continue the message! Even though we didn't get to physically put more time into the event with helping the girls train, I hope we still made an impact for the girls just by showing moral support. Look out for me on the track next year (possibly)!
