Wow! It looks for a few months I'll be living at home until I make enough money to move out. You know what that means... I have to unpack and "stay awhile", as my dad usually says. Yesterday morning, I woke up to some phone calls then started my cleaning spree. I had to get rid of some clothes, organize the TV stand and, most importantly, utilize the closet that has always been used for just tossing whatever I didn't need any time soon.
Since having to pack back and forth for college, I was on a roll and knew the importance of storage and avoiding the temptation of hoarding. I'm the worst at that when it comes to college notebooks, books and yearly binders. I just can't get rid of that stuff! Am I the only one? I like looking through them and reliving some of those memories. Man, I'm such a loser!
Anyways, There are some things I've learned since trying to make this walk-in-closet-sized room into my home:
Utilize all the space in the room. TV stand, high closet areas and even under the bed have potential to help make a room bigger than it really is and out of the way for only when you need it. I use these little plastic bins with lids to store crafts and electronics, but they take up a lot of space when I had them in my drawers. instead, I put them under the bed since they were the only thing that would fit nicely under it with easy access.
If you don't need it any time soon, store it away. I don't play board games often, so why do I need it accessible right from my bed? Those sort of things (out-of-season clothing, purses and bag that you know you won't need, extra pillowcases and sheets...) don't need to be place somewhere easily accessible when there are other more highly used things I may need more than Apples to Apples, like my iPod speaker or my body spray.
All usable storage is worth it. I was shopping at one of my favorite stores to get some last minute snack my dad just had to have, and I was just finishing my day of being unsuccessful in finding storage bins and such for my room. I know Aldi gets some random home goods, so I made sure to take a gander; of course there was a four level white rack thing, perfect size, but just not flattering for a bedroom. I took the window sheet thing that I rarely used for my dorm and placed it on the top and hung it over the rest of the shelves, and I feel it looks much better. I also have some storage drawers from college that aren't too pleasing to the eye, but I stored it in the closet, and it's still doing its job. Make the best of what you currently have to save money. It's totally worth it.
I'm just happy to finally be in one place for awhile so I'm able to feel like I'm at "home". I may not want to be here for too much longer, but it's nice to start to have a taste of what it will take when I start decorating for my first place on my own!
