I've been listening to Fierce Mercy every day since the first show I attended last week. I didn't listen to the album more than twice prior because I wanted to get familiar with the songs through hearing them live first; there's something about hearing an unfamiliar track in this setting. Not only is live music authentic, but you naturally allow yourself to block out your surrounds and be one with the artist and tune. Example: when I saw Colin in 2015 showcasing his album, Next Year People, "Waiting in the Rain" was an out-of-body experience because I still didn't know the song in its entirety and I let it take over me in that moment. It's to-date in my top 5 best Colin songs,
Came out of nowhere in a fast sunrise, there it lay before me and I recognized that it was fierce mercy telling me to take it slow or I'll be the last to know.
"The Last To Know," written by Colin and Michael Georgiades, contains the album's name, and it's a thought-provoking, deep and fantastically packaged song. Colin says about having more awareness in your actions when you start to see issues or concerns in your life, both personally and on a global scale. You recognize this issue, and you get a kick in the butt to get back in the right direction before things go downhill without a chance to get back up; that's how I interpreted what he said, anyway. In the Track By Track video series, he explains:
Sometimes we get those warnings, which is where the term came from, where you get a little warning where you have to take things a little slower or take care of yourself... But there's still something meriful about it because it's saying to us, 'You can still do something about it. You haven't got much time, but there's still a bit of time.'Perfection. It's very relevant in the world we live in; we're being presented with so much evidence of global issues, among many other issues, and for one reason or another, we can't band together and conquer it before it ends us. Mercy isn't going to be fierce - or even bothering us - for much longer. We still have time, though. There's still something we can do. Many of the messages and lessons I learn from Colin's storytelling remind me to live in the present but to also pay attention to some of the negative things that are around us once in awhile, too.
Don't blink an eye or look the other way. Mercy comes to visit you should let her stay. It may happen on any given day..."The Last To Know" caused me to reflect on my anxiety and made me analyze the moments when mercy arrives in my life. In a lot of situations, my worry forces me to take it too slow, even leading me to believe that if I do nothing at all, I won't have to deal with it because the problem will go away or the decision will be made for me. Both outcomes aren't ideal or positive.
I mistake small actions from others or my "anxious ghosts" cloned as mercy in the first place; there are many instances I'm probably thinking mercy is on my shoulder, warning me about something that isn't a true concern. Isn't that anxiety: ghosts cloaked as mercy, trying to get us to think every situation is a warning of something negative to come?
Take a listen for yourself, will ya. If you choose to purchase Fierce Mercy, I'd recommend buying the old school CD edition rather than a digital copy. The artwork from the cover to the insert are stunning and you won't be able to stop putting all the pieces on the front cover together. I'm probably the only one taking the cover too seriously, ha. I hope you enjoy this tune and the others as much as I have!
